My main point was - no craftsman would survive producing this quality, nor I believe in such a broad availability of ivory, before the end of Meiji to allow for mass production of such sloppy work.
One thing I know - you would never be selling something like this yourself. At least, I hope you wouldn't.

Stain, once again can be done to an old piece by a restorer today. Quality, there are some really poor old netsuke.
Wear, this is a tricky one, but once again its possible an old netsuke might not display wear. Though, I think we would agree as we share similar taste we personally want to see wear. The carving on the base, I think was added later. However, some shishi by this studio have this feature, but others don’t. Maybe someone saw one with and then this one was originally without, and thought add this feature.
Even impractical himotoshi, aren't age indicators. Old netsuke have poor placed himotoshi.
To use a Clive Hallam word, there is a “history” to the material. One part of the material, for me, is an age indicator. If I look at the last 5mm - 10mm of the extreme edge of the base, this says to me time has produced this appearance. I can see distinct layering, which sometimes looks like the Hamon on a sword. As I look further into the base, I then see a distinct white layer and then the beginning of cross hatched grain. Further inwards towards the himotoshi where the cross hatching gets more pronounced, I am not sure, but this area appears to exhibit a stain on the surface. What that is I cannot say.
Looking at the 3 images available, I am not even sure the base and the shishi is one piece of material. Bear in mind we are looking at images not the netsuke in hand.
All this said, I am not keen on this studios work. They repeated themselves again and again which leads me to believe they were either made as a very bog standard netsuke for the masses, or even they were made by a studio near a shrine and as a kind of tourist curio for the pilgrims.

The piece that I purchased was listed at the bottom end of the range that you described as moderate and was reduced a bit after I asked about it. I would gladly spend at the top of that range or beyond if I could feel confident that I was paying a fair price for an antique piece. Since I was not permitted to return or exchange the piece that I bought, I am glad that I did not risk more.
A provenance from a known and respected collection is not a guarantee of authenticity (I know of a museum curator who had low-grade art objects and even forgeries in his collection to use as reference material), but I will try to start with that if I do consider purchasing another netsuke. I am less concerned about high quality, aesthetic effect, or even investment value than about having an honest object that was actually used for its intended purpose in the Edo or Meiji period. If I can't find one that I feel confident about then I will just stick to enjoying examples in books and museums.
