My mother or grandmother had this netsuke couple. I have learned from your wonderful and hope you can help me further.
I am certain the metal stand is a late addition to the original carving. There clearly is a story in their faces, skull, snake and bag (dog?) at their feet. It seems to have the layering of ivory, not wood. Doesn’t seem plastic. Weighs 2-5/8oz (74 g) and 2-1/4” tall, 1-3/4” wide. It has a red lacquer signature on the bottom.
Can you help me identify its period? Mythology or story? Value?
