ago, I came across one of these old wood carvings, and was very excited to find it. I didn't purchase it, scared off by collectors who had doubts about its authenticity. I don't know a lot about these or what it would take to find out truly how old it is. There are a couple of things I would want to do if I were you. First of all, I would try to find someone who could read what is legible on the haku, as it certainly looks old and authentic. If the inscription on the box relates to the carving, that would be one helpful step- to link them a good as is possible after all these years. If it is an old carving, I am wondering if it is possible that someone tried to refresh the painting on it. Clive would know about that, and possibly have some ideas for you. Personally I think the strong colors ( without evidence of wear in some areas), is one cause for doubt as to its authenticity,- but has it possibly has been repainted? I don't know... These are only some suggestions to help in feeling more certain of its origin than you are at this point. I am certainly not an expert on the subject, but am somewhat of a sleuth in trying to figure out these things. So those are just some thoughts on what I would do if it were mine. Good luck!

I too think the paint looks a little too fresh on the originally posted item, and in areas where the gofun has chipped away, we still see quite a new, fresh, white cross section which leads me to believe it's been fairly recently abraded.

Using some of the info you so kindly provided, I searched this site and was able to understand just a bit more about it......I *think*.
The figure appears to be some sort of Sennin(?), or at least looks a bit like those that I've seen. Also, looks a bit like the figure, Ryujin......having a large fish attached to his back, but I believe that fish on Ryujin's back is a sheath for a sword. My fish as you can clearly see has a rope within its mouth. I did research a possible Ainu fisherman as you suggested and there's some similarities, but found nothing definitive.
My figure also has what appears to be gesso(?) throughout where the paint has worn away. From reading an older thread here, it seems some carvers used a light-wood, covered it in gesso and later applied colored pigments. I also seen there were a number of carvers who made figures in this 'painted-wood' style such as: Yoshimura Shuzan, Nagamachi Shuzan, Mondo, etc. etc.. etc...
Does anyone have any thoughts on the possible age of my figure? He appears quite old, but I'm not 100% sure.
Hopefully, I'm able to capture some better images of the lid's inscription with my camera and post a few later today. I'll also go over to the site you suggested and see if that poster you mentioned can help.
Thanks again for your time and thoughts on my figure. Hoping other members will chime-in and give their thoughts as well.
Thank you, Jo

The first word looks like Fusa 房 (cord/tassel) and if so is a positive way to start off describe the figure. Grammatically we can imagine something like ('Dangling cord in hand, standing fisherman'), though you would need to get the rest of the sentence authenticated to be sure. I say this because often you will find that a box has been added later for effect, so this is a step in the right direction, and the construction with wooden pins is good. You'll see square holes underneath for a cord to have once tied the box with. There is an expert over on the NMB Nihonto Message Board site called Mr Morita; if you put your box in the Translation section there he may be able to decypher it for you.
Good luck in your hunt and building your case. This will not happen overnight, but it will surely be an interesting learning process!

This old figure is a very recent purchase and I'm not 100% sure exactly what I have here. After a bit of research, I'm not sure if my figure is a Netsuke or Okimono?
It's made of painted wood and comes with what I assume is its original(?) storage box, with a very faint ink inscription written on its lid. The box is put together with 16 very small wooden pegs and not metal nails. The figure by itself measures approx: 4-1/4 inches.
Can you all please help me? Any thoughts on the who, what, when and where of this little guy?
Again, thank you all so much and I look forward to your replies.
