In every way that stag example is inferior. While it uses many of the iconographic elements seen in the traditional baying kirin models the cartoonisation is goofy rather than refined exaggeration of characterisitics. The flames, hair and musculature on the stag antler kirin is amateurish and doesn't have the accuracy of carving and finish of the genuine article... note that Okatomo can execute a circle or spiral whereas the carver of this modern stag version carves a more angular, jerky, squared-off spiral. It's made by someone who thinks netsuke are folk arty or tribal carvings or some such rubbish rather than the best and most refined miniature sculpture in the world.
