First of all, I am sorry to say that, in my opinion, this is a modern carving of sorts with not a significant monetary value. However, there is value in its content as the subject matter is Japanese— and also important in other Asian cultures. Both of the fabled creatures on your carving are important in Japan, and symbolic of traits that humans would aspire to. The Japanese see dragons as benefactors and protectors of mankind, symbolizing bravery, wisdom, and strength. Dragons are one of the most important symbols in East Asian culture and mythology. The phoenix symbolizes rebirth and triumph, as well as a renewal and rebuilding of one's self. It is also an important symbol of immortality. It is not uncommon to see them together on Asian art. I have them on a porcelain saki cup. Enjoy your piece for what it teaches us, about netsuke, yes, but also about an ancient culture.

I think this piece is nicely done, but I've seem and read about Netsukes in the couple's of week that I've been accepted in this forum and it is hard foe me come to a conclusion if it a real deal...
