Piers, I used your text, just substituted the word frog to crab.
This is a sashi netsuke, measuring 11,4 x 3,9 x 2,2 cm. Unfortunately the carver (Ichigyokusai) used red lacquer for his name and also for the crab. I don't know why. No colour would be nicer.
When I mentioned something about a sashi netsuke to the unknown dealer in Japan he said: This is not a netsuke, this is an incence rest!
Well, what ever it is. we know netsuke can be of multi function, why not.
As this is a thread started with the above pipecase. I know of a discussion about an artpiece. One person said, oh what a beautiful pipecase, the other said, oh no, this is an incence stick case, while the third said: Nothing at all, this is a brush container, oh, well .......,

It's nice to see it appreciated by experts as well! After Piers comments I looked at lotus flower seeds and felt rather foolish. I should have found that! I wasn't aware of the water reference, so that is a nice new added depth to the piece. Thanks Judy for spotting the painted glass on the eyes, they are only a mm wide so I've never known what they could be. Thank you Dave for trying to decipher the signature! The signature is hard to photo as it's on a rather uneven part of the surface, I've had another go and adjusted the contrast/sharpness to try and show it more clearly. I hope that it makes it easier to read - there are definitely only three characters. Thanks for all your help. It's given me a whole new perspective! Tom

Many years ago I inherited a netsuke from my grandmother which I'm struggling to find much detail about - I've spent quite a bit of time looking online looking for similar examples but struggle to find much that is similar. It's a kiseru holder with a frog and flower detail - the carving seems very detailed and the 'seeds' in the flower head are movable. There is also a makers mark but it doesn't seem to be that clear (and I understand that is often bogus anyway). Any information about the type of wood, period or even what type of flower it is would be much appreciated and solve many family arguments. Apologies for the quality of the pictures, if it helps I can attempt to get more detailed ones taken.
