I have bought the piece of the sitting man with fan, many years ago when I did not even know neither the word "netsuke/okimono" nor japanese art.
The thing that surprises me, is that I have bought it in a London specialized gallery not in a 4 penny shop. But this is a public forum and I can not say more.
Anyway, I would like you and Judy know that I really appreciate the frank opinions and the possible disappointment is not a problem.
Have a good day,
My Best, Laura

Check their websites, visit them and the British Museum and V&A to see some great pieces.

If you are right, the asian art gallery in London where I have bought it is not reliable. It is shocking! I wonder if it is possible!!! I have always bought in specialized galleries. I will deepen this subject. My Best, Laura

The item(s) you have posted are categorised as an NLO (Netsuke Like Object). These types of works are commonly reproduced in the far east, are non Japanese, and have unreadable signatures applied.
We would also like to take this opportunity to make you aware we don't offer valuations on the forum, and solicitation of items is prohibited. That being said we are comfortable to say that NLO's are worth little to nothing commercially, and the real value will only be apparent in some form of sentimental meaning this piece may hold for you.
To help you understand more about NLO's we would like to direct you to read this introduction on modern souvenir productions (NLO's) - viewtopic.php?f=12122&t=7940207
Your topic has been moved into the Modern Tourist Souvenir Netsuke & Netsuke-like Objects forum. As little more can be said on the NLO, this thread has been locked.
You are actively welcomed to create further topics, ask questions, or share more of your collection. If you are genuinely interested in learning more about netsuke and sagemono we would encourage you to make use of the search feature on the forum, and look through the many examples of authentic netsuke already posted.
We hope to see you develop a genuine interest in this addictive art form, and please know, a friendly community of helpful individuals awaits to answer any further questions you may have.

You are only asking what the signature reads, and not asking if this is an authentic Japanese carving, or if the signature is real or fraudulent. That makes it difficult to answer your question without giving you some kind of false impression of what you have. First, this is not a netsuke, but would be a type of okimono - a small carving to sit on a table. But it is not an authentic Japanese carving. It is not what it is trying to be. The little decoration on the back of his robe is called a Mon, which is a family crest. Here on your okimono, it is poorly placed, and probably not a real mon, but just meant to look like one. The kanji on the bottom reads Tomokazu, but it is a fraudulent signature, and is used because it is simple and easy to copy. The real Tomokazu only carved in wood, and his carvings are represented in the Lazarnick book. This carving is nothing like his work. This is probably a Korean carving that is poorly done, not in anyway close to what collectors look for in a netsuke, and meant to deceive the buyer. It was most likely carved in the late 20C by some other Asian person - not Japanese.. I am sorry to disappoint you, but on the forum we try to be honest so that you don't buy these things that are late carvings and probably carved with illegal ivory. Moderator team

Perhaps a sort of priest, a noble??? The signature too, it is still a mistery for me! It is little like a netsuke (cm 5 tall) but the absence of himotoshi suggests that it is not a netsuke. And then? A very little okimono? The head, the face and the espression reminds me that of the rat catcher (netsuke). What do you think? Thank you for any food for thought!!! Sorry for my English, it is not my native language. My Best
