It wasn't until early 2019 that a doodle of a seated dog in the style of a classic netsuke design caught my imagination (second picture). From there i made some maquettes from modelling clay to work out the form and positioning of the limbs. Then i roughly sketched it onto a block of wood and started carving. It took some time to decide on the fine detail of the design and this is something i work out as i go along. The stick in the dogs mouth was not a stick until quite far on in the process. My carving process also takes a long time. I mentioned in the show and tell session that i am not a quick carver as i do not start carving with a fully finished design. Different carvers have different methods of carving and i have found that this approach works for me. I don't think there is a formulaic method for carving contemporary netsuke. It wasn't until pandemic lock-down that i have had the time to take the final steps and finish my netsuke, refining the form and contours, inlaying the eyes with umimatsu and concentrating on the fine fur work, followed by polishing and staining and polishing again. Those final steps two a few weeks of work alone.
