One of my favorite objects in the show was this ancient painted wood pair, one of which holds the key to the treasures, in this case the rice grainary.

Following the tour, our members strolled down the block to the Japan Foundation to continue with our official meeting. We began with a handling session focused on animals, real and imaginary, plus some new acquisitions from Paris. The main presentation was a recap and review of the Paris Convention. We began with fun slides of convention-goers at play around Paris, and then followed with five-ish minute slide presentations of the highlights of each lecture in Paris. Steve Koppich (NoCal Chapter Chair, down for the day) and I shared the presenting duties, except that Dave Butsumyo also reprised his Paris lecture on Year of the Boar personally, since he was in the room!

Thanks are due to many people who helped put together this meeting. Thanks to Chris Drosse of LACMA who arranged the tour (and free admission!), and of course to Rob Singer, who gave such a grand talk. Thanks to Hideki Hara, Director of the Japan Foundation, who opened on Sunday to accommodate our meeting. Thanks also to Steve Koppich, who shared with me the big job of condensing hour long lectures into five minute summaries. And finally, thanks are due to all the INS Conference presenters who generously shared their slides with us so we could make our presentations.

Our next meeting will be in February/March 2020. If you are interested in attending, please feel free to contact me, by phone or by email.

Wanted to let everyone know that there is going to be a very special Southern California Chapter meeting on Sunday 2/4. It will be held at the LA County Museum of Art's Japanese Pavilion, home of the Raymond Bushell Collection of Netsuke. The Pavilion is closing that very day for five years as part of the museum's massive reconstruction project. The Pavilion, unlike most of the other LACMA buildings, is not being demolished, but it will be home ot a lot of displaced curators and conservators during the construction, so all the art is coming off exhibit. The meeting is our last chance to see the collection and say a temporary farewell until 2023. LACMA is providing complimentary admission for all. Viewing and mingling starts at 11am, and at noon, Hollis Goodall, the Curator of Japanese Art will be lecturing on the topic of "The Curator's Eye". We will close with an (optional) lunch at Ray and Stark's, the terrific on-site restaurant. Please join us!!! RSVP: Sue Romaine sromaine@sbcglobal.net 818-231-9449
