Addendum: I'm unsure of the accuracy of the report but found the specific gravity of 1.34-1.35 for umimatsu, presumably after the outer layers have been cleaned away to get to the more homogenous material suitable for carving. Horn would seem to me to be a far less dense material although both are of a keratinius nature.
