Interestingly, the edges are frilled and white, so the transparency in the edging of the baleen could be reflecting that.

*Li Guang was out hunting and in the evening shot what he thought was a tiger. It was actually a rock though, but when the hunting party returned the next day they were astonished to see it embedded in the rock; the fletched end had turned into a flower, (the Nadeshiko in Japanese). (A pink or carnation.) They fired further arrows at the rock, which all bounced off. There is a Chinese proverb, "One arrow through a rock".

PS The correct reading of his name was Dōsan with a strong ‘s’, (not Dōzan). Each time I think I’ve got it right, I repeat the mistake, probably a common error among Japanese people too.

Symbol. Does it represent the sun, like the moon sukashi insert near the edge, and/or the central motif of the Nadeshiko flower?

Function. What was the central hole designed for right back in the very beginning?
So...
1. Should it be left unpegged, and was it for a cord, either with a simple central knot, or somehow looped through the moon too?
2. Was it for a cream colo(u)r Mekugi peg/post/pin? That would colo(u)r coordinate with the other white features, but it might add to the splash numbers and ruin the math(s).
3. Was it for a black Mekugi? That would recall the central round heart of the Nadeshiko flower above.

At present I have three options laid out in front of me, but I am leaning towards No.3.

Just posting to say that the final piece of the jigsaw fell into place today, I think.

This Netsuke now has to be connected somehow with Saitō Dōsan, the Viper of Mino, the clever Daimyo who so impressed Oda Nobunaga, and whose daughter Nobunaga married. We see that in his own design posted above, of one wave and five (two plus three) water droplets. This design was not continued after his death apparently, as his son who disowned him managed to kill his siblings before killing his 'father' too. The meaning of the design is said to be the power and fluidity of the waves, which push and pull to get their desired result.

What was bothering me, and those kind people (you) reading this thread, was the dark frilled ground or backdrop, a cloud or a leaf or something. (?) Well today I discovered that the Saito family traditionally used the Nadeshiko flower Kamon. See illustration. This has five frilled petals or lobes, as does the Netsuke!

So here below is a shot of the Saito family's Nadeshiko Kamon (fringed pink, large pink, Dianthus Superbus), which Saito Dōsan did not apparently use for very long.

Would it not solidify the case if you found two Kamon seemingly from the same family portrayed in one Netsuke? 8-)

His Daimyo in Mino was Saito Dosan (Toshimasa), the 'Viper of Mino', and something about his Kamon motif kept tugging at my mind. I looked it up and it depicts a double-headed wave, and five round spray droplets, and the Kamon is said to have been designed by Saito Dozan himself. No-one knows exactly what he wished to represent by it, but it is suggested that the movement of waves contain the laws of the Bushi's martial art, and the three and the two depict the saying that there are things in life which can be accepted, and things which are unacceptable. (My translation, but there are probably better ways to express it in English.)

Anyway, the Netsuke we have been discussing in this thread seems to bear some similarity to Saito Dosan's family crest. At least, the unexplained white object could even be a wave...?

At first glance it looks like a frog on a leaf. Flip it over and it looks to be simply the reverse side with a pleasing pattern of spots made by the inserts. Stars in the night sky pattern, Orion's Belt perhaps. Nothing more. Innocent.

Held in the hand of the owner, a fisherman, mariner or trader perhaps, (the materials being marine-sourced), it could be something else, an article of faith, the Southern Cross.

We do know that symbolism plays a huge part in Japan, and that Christian symbolism was hidden or half-hidden throughout Japan once the bans and crackdowns started in earnest. The Satsuma cross-in-a-circle Kamon for example was explained away by the Shimazu family as a horse's bit (kutsuwa) or alternatively as an ancient symbol of unknown origins handed down from way before the advent of any Portuguese or Spanish missionaries. I have a matchlock from Lord Hosokawa's Kumamoto Castle which is covered in numbers containing 十 for ten, armoury inventory numbers perhaps but surely also reflecting the Hosokawa family's one-time religious roots, bestowing talismanic protection to the bearer.

Apologies, but you will have to rely on my translation until something better pops along.

Voyagers such as Tenjiku Tokubei (b.1612) who travelled south and east in the early 17th century (1626~) described this constellation as 'Crus' or 'Cruceiro'.

Actually I showed this to a top Japanese armour expert today and his comment was, "Southern cross? In that case maybe it's a hidden Christian Netsuke?"

Is there no end to the possibilities? Almost enough to write another article!!! 8-) (Loving the dried salmon above, by the way.)
