In your opinion do you in general there was a prevailing method used by most netsukeshi in period? Or there is just no reliable historic sources to know for sure? Or, do you think the various schools from various regions all had unique finishing/coloring methods, and so no "most common" method exists?

]]> 2021-08-11T19:12:52 2021-08-11T18:10:25 http://79.170.40.239/netsuke.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8081251&p=84841#p84841 Wood, like all organic materials tends to go through a chemical process of oxidation (caused by oxygen, light and/or intentional chemical means) over time. it's a molecular change in the chromophoric structures within cellulose and other wood-based compounds which results in colored components. Heat can accelerate this process.
Stains were used and are used to color wood. There are many naturally sourced, largely plant-based, dyes that have been used. All lend color components, but also tannins (see oxidation, above) to the coloring. Other stains are more 'chemical' in nature like potassium permanganate, and silver nitrate, and iron sulphate x tannin complexes. Again, these stain by adding color but also speeding up oxidation. These have been used historically as well as in the present.
Waxes and oils have also been used. These tend to darken wood by oxidation, trapping dirt, and saturation (which causes an optical deepening of wood color due to the way light hits the wood and is either absorbed, transmitted or reflected).
Handling, much like the application of oils and waxes, darkens wood for the same reasons. Handling, over a long time also serves to polish wood. Smoothing the surface of wood makes it appear darker too.

There isn't much in the literature about specific coloring recipes and dye formulations- I think artists/schools developed their processes and stuck with them without much sharing of trade secrets. You'll find though that generally, very similar coloring agents were/are also used in European woodworking traditions.
