I had not seen a double shell/clam either (though only looking at netsuke/sagemono for a year nearly) but remember reading that it was in the repertoire of the Kyubei makers and it seemed a nice example. The element you ponder, Alison, is a cord/rope that originates near the attachment apparatus and wraps around both clams ending in a tassel (the fan shaped bit). The photos don’t do it justice. I’m sure you’re all aware that the lost wax technique is used daily in the dental laboratory to create gold inlays/onlays crowns and partial denture components. I’ve had the pleasure of making one gold crown myself!

I'd bet Alan's right that the golden tone results from some polishing. People often do that in an effort to make an old work of art in metal look prettier, without considering that they're obliterating part of the history. If you look inside with a flashlight, the metal may well look older. Anyhow it's a handsome and interesting thing, Davidgieve.
