The material seems reasonably thick there, Alan, so no weakness that I can see. The central hole does looks a little less solid and possibly prone to crumbling. (?) But not radically so. If the second hole is deliberate, it is roughy formed, but if for suspending a second sagemono, then perhaps the owner and not the artist might have formed it? Alison, if it was there from the first, you'd think the carver might have done a smoother job of rounding it off.(?)
