I have bought 2 books on Netsuke at an auction in Luxembourg which should soon arrive and Adrian Heindrich from Lempertz recommended a catalogue from an exhibition in Moscow, the package from Amazone is waiting for me at the office

The museum is currently closed because of lacking budget. It needs a thorough refurbishment. Last year, I spoke to former Director of Guimet, Mrs Sophie Makariou about Ennery and the great collection of Netsuke, and she said that she had alerted French Ministry of Cuture about Ennery’s condition, but had not succeeded in raising new funds, which is very unfortunate.

My interest in collecting Netsuke started in 2019 after reading the book “The Hare with Amber eyes” by Edmund de Waal, absolutely fascinating! Well knowing that you expert members will sigh thinking that you have heard this story often.
Anyhow, since, I have read some books mainly “The Raymond and Frances Bushell Collection of Netsuke” and several catalogues from Zacke, Vienna. Special thanks here to Lukas and his advice.
I’m looking forward to much more reading in the INS journals both past and future.

Here in my first post I wish to share my acquisition in the Zacke sale of 16/04/2021 a wood Netsuke of Koko Sennin by Masakazu. As depicted in the catalogue “the rather rarely depicted Koko Sennin inside a pot and holding his large earrings”. I particularly like to contemplate the ukibori pimples on the surface of the pot. I only attach one photo from the catalogue, so you may not see this feature.

I also appreciate the provenance of this Netsuke with its old collection number to the base. I don’t see so many members talking about provenance, but in my opinion it is important, probably since my job is working in a gallery (specialized in Modern & Contemporary painting). Provenance is our main concern.

I see that the upcoming convention is set for Boston in October 2024, and I’ll consider to travel if possible for me.
It would be a wonderful opportunity to meet other passionate collectors.

The figure is more oni-like throughout, but the scales (*and claws...?) point to serpentine, snake, dragon. Admittedly the kirin was said to have flames and a scaly body.

The claws too look more oni than dragon.
