I asked lately a cobbler how he removed the contact glue for soles: he said only mechanical scraping. I’m skeptical about being able to take it off.

I will look for other solvents in hardware store and I will keep you informed.

(Look at the instructions on the backs of packets of super strength glue in the hardware store. Often they will recommend the quickest way to release the glue in case of accidents.)

Then by dipping the netsuke one week in a bowl of alcohol. No move at all.
Then same process with a a nail thinner, then with white spirit - with the same result. Fortunately no damage to the netsuke.
I will keep you informed of my next process soon.

There is only one item missing I can imagine : the the sacred pearl (Tama).

I have a clue to this. In my youth I wore an earnail with a pearl.

I am sure a jeweler can fix this for me, as long as I success to unglue the disc.

And it can be any time desoldered.

This leads me to the following question : what do you think about changes? I’m not talking about meticulous restoration but contemporary additions. What is your opinion ? sacrilege or improvement ?

Now I understand that there is another importance, and that doing nothing is not a solution. Thank you for your suggestion of a rescue kit.
This netsuke does not have a great pecuniary value, but it comes from a Swiss collection and I do not want to damage it further.
I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

Two Netsuke with cracks like that I experimented with! How adventurous do you feel?

(The problem is that the crack might continue to propagate. You should probably first remove the plate anyway and shave the inner edge of the manju to lessen the pressure.)

I tried to force gently but nothing moved at all. No milimeter move and the only noise is the one of the metal inside folding (it seems the dragon is welded to a thinner plate - this thinner plate making the sound).
I stored the netsuke in the freezer hoping to shrink the metal : no success either.
I will not try further : it is my first dragon representation and I do not want to make more damage.
